Why sauna? Good for the mind and body
66%
lower risk of developing dementia*
65%
lower risk of developing Alzheimer's disease*
48%
lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease*
About these figures
*All three figures come from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease (KIHD) study at the University of Eastern Finland, which followed more than 2,300 middle-aged Finnish men for around 20 years. Compared with a single weekly visit, using a sauna 4 to 7 times a week was associated with a 66% lower risk of dementia and a 65% lower risk of Alzheimer’s disease (Laukkanen et al., Age and Ageing, 2017), and a 48% lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). These are observational findings in one population. Encouraging, not a promise, and no substitute for medical advice.
