The Benefits of Sauna

Regular sauna use is one of the simplest rituals for body and mind — from recovery and relaxation to long-term wellbeing, with some of the strongest research of any wellness habit.

The science

Why heat helps

Sit in a sauna and your body responds the way it does to moderate exercise: your heart rate rises, blood vessels widen, circulation increases and you begin to sweat. Repeated regularly, that heat stress appears to train the cardiovascular system in ways researchers have now tracked across decades — most notably in long-term Finnish population studies following thousands of sauna bathers.

› About these figures

*Both figures come from the Kuopio Ischaemic Heart Disease (KIHD) study at the University of Eastern Finland, which followed more than 2,300 middle-aged Finnish men for around 20 years. Men using a sauna 4–7 times a week, compared with once a week, had a 66% lower risk of developing dementia (Laukkanen et al., Age and Ageing, 2017) and a 48% lower risk of fatal coronary heart disease (Laukkanen et al., JAMA Internal Medicine, 2015). These are observational findings in one population — encouraging, not a promise, and no substitute for medical advice.

</details>

Heart & circulation

A workout for your blood vessels

Regular sauna bathing is linked in the KIHD research to lower blood pressure, better vascular function and a lower risk of sudden cardiac death, with the largest effects in the most frequent bathers. The heat raises your heart rate to levels comparable with a brisk walk, while the widened blood vessels ease the work of each beat — one reason researchers describe sauna as passive cardiovascular conditioning.

Recovery

Muscles, movement and training

Heat increases blood flow to worked muscles, which is why a sauna after training has long been part of athletic routines — it supports recovery and eases the tension that follows hard sessions. Timing matters less than consistency: our guides to sauna before and after workouts and sauna vs ice bath cover how to fit heat (and cold) around exercise.

Mind & sleep

Switching off, sleeping better

A sauna session marks a clean break at the end of the day: the heat relaxes muscles, the quiet settles the mind, and the gentle fall in body temperature afterwards is a natural cue for sleep. Many regular bathers describe it as the most reliable wind-down they have — our guide to sauna and mental health looks at what the habit can (and cannot) do for stress and mood.

A sauna at home makes the 4–7-a-week rhythm realistic. If in doubt, see how long to spend in a sauna and when it’s best to skip the sauna.

The Finnish studies looked at traditional saunas, the same kind of heat as our traditional indoor saunas, while our infrared cabins give a gentler, longer sit. If the whole family will use it, a sauna for five or six lets everyone share the heat, or you can browse every Hekla sauna.
